Women's Empowerment, Health, and Trauma Relief
In August 2011, Aid Still Required and our partners the International Association of Human Values (IAHV) and the We Advance Women’s Clinic implemented a trauma relief program for the women of Wharf Jeremie in Cite Soleil's notorious slum. Cite Soleil has a long history of untoward violence, low literacy and high incidences of disease and sexual assault (there are roughly 100 rapes per day in the tent cities and the settlements). This area is considered so dangerous, most non-profits will not work there. This means, of course, that Cite Soleil has been grossly neglected.
Due to the success of this stress reduction program for PTSD and rape victims in Kosovo, Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan, we formed the collaborative to pilot the program in Wharf Jeremie to gauge the area's interest. We were thrilled by the response.
We had initially projected 80 women would participate in the program. In the end, 143 signed on. Given that the program requires attendance for four consecutive days for 3-4 hours per day and that the participants would likely be called away for daily domestic duties or for emergencies, we projected about 50% would complete the entire course. Again we were surprised, and deeply heartened - more than 80% completed all four days and about 90% have attended the bi-monthly follow-up sessions.
Due to this exceptional response, we're now designing ways to expand this program further into Cite Soleil and other cities.

Child Services
The rate of orphaned and abandoned children has more than doubled since the earthquake putting great strain on orphanages, which cost remarkable little to maintain. For example, one orphanage which serves 58 children needs only $200/month to maintain its staff.
Another orphanage your contributions are supporting needs a washing machine, a stove and a refrigerator which we will provide this coming year.
Reforestation
98% of Haiti has been denuded causing nationwide soil erosion and making farming nearly impossible in most regions. Reforesting Haiti is of utmost importance: Trees provide fertile, stable environment for crops, prevent erosion, reduce damaging mudslides caused by earthquakes and hurricanes, and improve watersheds - all critical to Haiti's rebuilding effort and future prosperity.
ASR is developing a collaboration with the Comprehensive Development Program (CODEP) which is planting 700,000 per year at a cost of less than $1.00 per tree. This program reclaims land for farmers, provides year-round employment for 600 people with incentives for loyal workers including new steel roofs for their houses, new cisterns, and a new house after an average of four years of service.
